Gamelan Naga Kencana (GNK)

Known as Naga Kencana (translated as Golden Dragon), the Gamelan Ensemble aims to promote the appreciation and awareness of the diverse styles of Gamelan music to the Republic Polytechnic (RP) community. Gamelan refers to an indigenous Indonesian orchestra which encompasses a large variety of instruments belonging to an ancient cornucopia of regions and styles. The instruments played include drums, variously tuned bronze gongs, and different sets of bronze metallophones, cymbals and flutes.

Naga Kencana is honoured to be under the tutelage of Mr Amran Ahmad Sowyan, an experienced Gamelan instructor and a pioneer member of gamelan asmårådånå. The group has also been very privileged to have attended Master classes conducted by Pak Midiyanto, a reputable Gamelan teacher from Indonesia.
Since their inception in 2007, Naga Kencana has performed at several functions within RP and also at external occasions with other collaborators such as Gamelan Asmaradana and Gamelan Singa Nglaras(NUS). We look forward to share this unique form of music with a larger appreciative audience.
